eOccMed.com was founded by Chief Executive Officer Behzad Emad, M.D., an experienced physician and visionary business leader who passionately believes that telemedicine is the future of healthcare. With creativity, imagination and energy, he leads by inspiration as a committed force to expand the reach of telemedicine around the world, which he considers his true calling.
With its dual focus on Employee Wellness and Employee Work Safety, eOccMed.com is a natural extension of Dr. Emad’s 18 years of professional expertise in industrial medicine treating injured workers and as an innovative pioneer in the emerging field of modern telemedicine. His vision is to provide a convenient, cost-effective bridge between employees and medical providers that improves healthcare access, reduces lost work hours and enhances quality of care through the use of cutting-edge technology in a growing industry. As a service-based organization founded on principles of integrity, innovation and respect, eOccMed.com’s purpose is empowering patients to take control of their health while benefiting all stakeholders, including employers, insurers, doctors, investors, suppliers, communities and the environment.
Dr. Emad first established eOccMed.com as the online division of his thriving company Avicenna Health Solutions (AHS)—which provides diagnosis and treatment of disorders of the muscles, bones and nervous system via telemedicine technology. Previously, Dr. Emad led the successful Southland Injury Medical Center as its Medical Director for 14 years, enhancing its renown beyond Los Angeles as an expert clinic in the fields of physiatry, electrodiagnostic medicine, non-surgical injury treatment, functional restoration and pain management.
As a Qualified Medical Evaluator for the State of California, Dr. Emad performs med-legal evaluations including QME, IME, AME and AMA-guided assessment of disabilities, including personal injury, industrial injury and commercial injury, as well as serving as an expert witness for personal injury cases. He is also in high demand as a trusted resource for efficient, accurate independent medical reviews, pharmacy benefit management, peer reviews, medical necessity assessment, plan language and medical policy, primarily pertaining to evidence-based medicine (ACOEM, MTUS, ODG and more) and the biopsychosocial model of care.
In addition, he is often called upon to serve as an expert professional consultant in support of other medical practices and clinics regarding sales, mergers and acquisitions, accounts receivable, healthcare technology, quality assurance, product development and improvement, product research, EHR implementation and telemedicine implementation. He has also been an advocate for safe injection practices and a consultant for responsible opioid prescribers.
Over the past 20 years, Dr. Emad’s leadership skills have impacted the policies and membership of professional organizations within the medical community, as he has served in numerous high-level positions such as: Board Member of the California Society of Industrial Medicine and Surgery; Director, District 1–Los Angeles and President, Resident Advancement Council for the California Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; and Chair, Resident Elective Exchange Task Force for the Resident Physician Council of American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Currently, as a member of the American Telemedicine Association, he is representing eOccMed by taking an active role to influence legislation for the reimbursement of telemedicine services by workers’ compensation carriers in the State of California.
Dr. Emad earned his medical degree from the State University of New York Health Science Center in Brooklyn after graduating with honors from the State University of New York at Oneonta in chemistry. He interned at the University of California, Irvine and was Chief Resident while completing his residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the University of California, Los Angeles. As his way of giving back, he currently volunteers as an educator for residents, medical students and fellows at UCLA. Throughout his long career, Dr. Emad has received additional training in numerous advanced medical techniques and has extensively studied the theories and best practices of top business management educators. He has published numerous articles and is a sought-after speaker and presenter in the field of industrial medicine.
